How Long Should You Stay in a Hot Tub

Spending time in your hot tub can help with muscle relaxation, better sleep and by providing entertainment to your family. Users should also be aware, however, of the amount of time they are spending in their at-home spa. The rules aren’t strict, but there are guidelines in place that prevent the risk of danger. These recommendations vary from person to person, but the warning signs are relatively the same across the board. Here are some factors that determine the amount of time you should be spending in your hot tub! 


The temperature of your hot tub is one of the most important factors when determining how long you should take a soakWater set at 98 degrees is close enough to our body temperatures that it shouldn’t have an impact on safety. Temperatures raised by two or three degrees can begin to have effects on your body. An ideal hot tub temperature is set between 100 and 102 degrees and you can relax for as long as 15 to 30 minutes safely.  


Adults with no preexisting health conditions have more flexibility with the amount of time they can take a dip in their hot tub. If you have a heart condition, blood pressure issues or are pregnant, it is probably better to avoid hot tubs. Either way, make sure you have a water near you as your body can become dehydrated from the heat.   


Kids are the main age group to watch when it comes to time spent in a hot tub. Children under the age of 12 should keep their time in the water under five minutes. This is if the water temperature is set to 102 degrees or higher. Setting your spa to 98 degrees allows kids to stay in much longer. One tip is to be sure your child isn’t fully submerged, have them sit in a lifted seat or even outside of the tub! 

These are just a few factors that determine how long you should soak. Be sure to pay attention to your body and the signs it may be giving you that it is time to take a break. Drink water and swim healthy!
